Importance of drums beyond just an instrument

Comprehending top healing benefits of drumming

Importance of drums beyond just an instrument

In a lot of cultures, drums have been heavily used for different purposes since ancient times – from religious ceremonies and rituals to sporting events as a means of signaling or communicating. However, it’s a lesser-known fact that drumming also brings a multitude of healing benefits and it has been used for this purpose in ancient times as well.

Here are some major healing benefits of drumming.

It improves mental health

In various research projects, drums have been successfully used to enhance social functioning and treat different mental health conditions like anxiety, depression, aggression, PTSD symptoms, addictions, etc. In addition, recent findings about the benefits of drumming seem to be even more interesting. Mindfulness training and meditation have always been crucial parts of drumming practices. Deep concentration on the rhythmic patterns regulates the thought process and hence, helps to lower mental chatter and calm the mind. Even simple practices of drumming can help a person to free his/her mind from the clutter.

It improves the quality of life

Regular practice of drumming lowers blood pressure, induces deep relaxation, and generates feelings of well-being. According to medical research, stress is one of the most important contributors to nearly every disease and a major cause of life-threatening illnesses like stroke, heart attacks etc. Research revealed that drumming helps to distract a person from grief and pain, which, in turn, improves the quality of life of the drummer.

Importance of drumming isn’t only limited to the above. Drum circles bring an opportunity for the participants to obtain a sense of interpersonal support and feel connected with others.  This can lessen the isolation and stigma often experienced by people with mental illnesses.
