Life Is Like a Roller-Coaster Ride, and You Need Self-Control to Survive

What you need to know about self-control

Self-control is an individual’s ability to subdue impulses to achieve his or her goals rather than immediately responding to these impulses. Most of the time, people evaluate and plan to avoid the things that they will regret later in life. The ability of a person to exert self-control is called willpower. This allows the person to direct his attention to their goals at hand.

In the poem “The Roller Coaster of Life,” it states that “up one day and down the next.” Everyone has gone through this kind of situation, and sometimes people cannot handle their situation and they are consumed by negative thoughts. There are many things that you can do to learn self-control and overcome these obstacles in life.

Here are some tips on how to have more self-control:

  1. Self-affirmation. Performing self-affirmation will help you have more self-control. Every time that you are telling yourself that you can’t, you are creating a reminder of your limitations. This indicates that you are forcing to do things that you do not want to do. It is better to create a positive affirmation such as “I can do it.” If you repeat this over and over again, you will be able to develop your self-control even more.
  2. Delaying immediate gratification. This is another method to develop self-control. By doing this, you will develop your ability to wait to get or achieve what you want. Even though this is quite difficult to do, it is necessary to develop self-control. Choosing to gain long-term rewards over immediate gratification is really a big challenge for many people. This is because people want to get immediate rewards after they have achieved something. You should have strong willpower to overcome this obstacle.
  3. Meditating on a regular basis has many benefits both in your physical and mental well-being. This will allow you to know many things about self-control. Even though there are times that you are feeling down, there is nowhere to go but up. Do not worry about the things over which you have no control. Meditation helps lower emotional reactivity and help you control your urges and giving into negativity.
  4. Another thing that you can do to develop self-control is to manage your stress efficiently. High levels of stress allow people to surrender and give in to temptations and force them to create decisions that are based on short-term outcomes.
